Albertinen Krankenhaus

New Geriatric Medicine Center

The Albertinen-Diakoniewerk e.V. was founded in 1907, and moved in 1964 into the first phase of construction of the Albertinen Hospital at its current location, Süntelstraße 11a. At that time, the Albertinen-Diakoniewerk e.V. has developed into the largest diaconal hospital operator in Hamburg. Through the development of various geriatric services, including GIA, geriatric traumatology, cognitive geriatrics and palliative geriatrics, it serves as a beacon for the development, evaluation and dissemination of pioneering geriatric and gerontological care concepts. The facilities for geriatric patients were spread across the Albertinen-Haus, which housed both inpatient and day-care facilities of the Centre for Geriatrics, and the geriatric ward B4 in the Albertinen Hospital.

As part of the new construction project to expand the existing Albertinen House, these facilities were consolidated and centralised. The existing buildings on the site were demolished prior to construction. The primary goal of the planning was to strengthen existing synergies within the facility and optimise routes for patients and staff through the overall structure. As a result of the merger, the new building is perceived as an independent functional unit and building in its own right as the ‘Centre for Geriatric Medicine’ (ZfA). For the growing elderly population, the ZfA offers comprehensive treatment, rehabilitation and care services in a single building.

The project is funded by public resources from the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
