Kath. Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg
Modernization of Emergency Department
Germany's first Interdisciplinary Emergency Centre (INZ) was established at kath. Marienkrankenhaus. The innovative concept was coordinated in close collaboration between HENKE + PARTNER and Dr. Wünning's team and implemented in three construction phases within the converted existing structure.
The construction project responds to modern developments and forward-looking care at the site: in future, the new emergency centre will organise and treat patients in three different streams. Low- or medium-care patients will be assigned to a care category during triage and separated from each other spatially. In the low-care area, patients will be directed to general medicine, treated as in a doctor's office, and in most cases will be able to leave the emergency department after treatment. In the medium care area, patients are taken to the interdisciplinary examination and treatment rooms. After treatment, patients can leave the INZ, are referred to the high care area or admitted as inpatients. Patients who are brought to the ZNA by ambulance are taken directly to the high care area, where they receive immediate treatment. The construction of the former inner courtyard separates ambulatory and bedridden patients, which complies with future emergency care requirements in accordance with the GBA decision. The U+B rooms facing the courtyard can be used from both corridors, enabling strict separation between the high-care area and the other two care areas.
The project was implemented within the specified time and budget constraints and while the hospital remained in operation in a dense urban environment.
The project was funded by public resources.
