LungenClinic

New building

A special architectural language for a unique clinic – developed by HENKE + PARTNER!

The design concept "Lungs – Breathing – Air", which was specially designed for the LungenClinic, defines the new building and emphasises the medical focus of the clinic. The LungenClinic was the first clinic in Germany to be certified as a lung centre by the State Hospital Committee of the Ministry of Health (G-BA) and is an internationally renowned specialist clinic for all diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract.

From larger components to smaller elements and out into the outdoor space, the concept "Lungs – Breathing – Air" runs seamlessly throughout the building:
In the foyer, visitors are welcomed by a curved counter that appears almost to be floating. A sail-like structure spans around the gallery above, creating an unique ambient effect. A wayfinding system, coordinated with the clinic’s CI colour scheme, guides visitors intuitively through the new building. In the patient rooms, the concept is reflected in the individually designed medical care units. The connecting main corridor (magistrala) is characterised by the convex-concave wooden columns, a wing-shaped roof and the permeable transition to the landscaped area with large existing trees. The symbiotic interconnection of architecture and landscape is created through a constant connection to the surrounding nature, forming a modern and healing environment for patients (Healing Architecture) as well as an attractive working environment for staff. In the outdoor area, the individualised elements can be experienced through the distinctive façade design: like gills, façade elements open semi-permeably, creating a dynamic and exciting impression from both inside and out.

The interlinking between medical care and architectural design creates a striking exterior with a special significance – a unique design for an outstanding healthcare building in Germany.

The measure was funded by public funds from the state of Schleswig-Holstein and implemented during ongoing operations.
